On the California Gaviota coastline, mountain lions, black bears, bobcats, coyotes, mule deer and wild pigs roam the beaches. This movement is crucial for marine-inland nutrient cycling and threatened by development. Conservation initiatives to preserve coastlines protect wildlife coastal access.
This quilt depicts the wildlife tracks that are commonly seen on beaches along the Gaviota coastline, one of the last wild coastlines left in California. It is inspired by the species I study and the tracks that I see on the beach when I go to collect samples for my fieldwork. The quilt is machine stitched using repurposed fabric.
