The glittering lights of offshore platforms are a threatening presence to many, but beauty also lives there. Underwater, the steel riggings create nurseries for spawning fish, such as the endangered cowcod, and experience some of the highest secondary productivities on Earth. Although the story of our oil-rig reefs is arduous in its political and economic complexities, research can uncover a seemingly-contradictory coexistence where the tenacity of life conquers unforgiving places.
