Description

Skin protects from the outside world. Blood vessels keep blood inside our bodies. Cells form the barriers that separate two environments. They maintain this barrier by closely adhering to one another, forming a wall of sorts. This image shows cells protecting the fly egg from the environment.

Cells surrounding the Drosophila fruit fly egg chamber, called follicle cells, were stained with 1. the cell-cell adhesion molecule shotgun or E-cadherin, 2. The myosin motor protein spaghetti squash, and 3. the filamentous actin forming part of the cytoskeleton. This image was captured on a Zeiss laser scanning confocal microscope. This image was processed in the image application FIJI.
