This aerial photograph shows hundreds of densely-packed, regularly spaced earth mounds, called "surales". Very common in savanna grasslands of the Orinoco Llanos in Colombia and Venezuela, surales are created by a large, still undescribed, species of earthworm.
This high-resolution aerial photograph was taken in Colombia using a remote-controlled drone (picture credit: Delphine Renard, PIXY™ drone). This image not only shows the aesthetics of regular patterns in natural landscapes but also highlights the benefits of drone technology for ecology.
