Announcing the Third Annual "Art of Science" Competition

January 06, 2016

Share the beauty of discovery and the story of your science with the those around you!

The Schuller Lab and the Center for Science and Engineering Partnerships at the California Nanosystems Institute announce the third annual "Art of Science" competition.

In science, as in art, the practitioner pursues moments of discovery when observations become greater than the sum of their parts and begin to reveal an untold story.  Join us this winter in an event to capture the imagination, challenge beliefs and expectations, and share the beauty and meaning of science through illustrative photographs and images from your research.

The Art of Science initiative invites UCSB students and postdocs to tell the story of their research through the aesthetic; whether it be striking spectroscopic images of a new material, data from a series of simulations, interesting photos of a device or instrument, or some other aspect of research captured visually.

The last two competitions have seen over 75 submissions, with winning pieces on exhibits at the UCSB Library and Santa Barbara Museum of Art. This year's winners will once again begin their exhibition cycle at the UCSB Library in Spring Quarter. We look forward to these works of art sharing the joy of discovery with our community.

First-place will receive a prize of $250. Prizes of smaller amounts will also be awarded to second, third-place and community vote winners.

Submissions due January 29, 2016
