Announcing the Fourth Annual "Art of Science" Competition

December 20, 2016

Share the beauty of discovery and the story of your science with the those around you!

The Schuller Lab and the Center for Science and Engineering Partnerships at the California Nanosystems Institute together with the College of Creative Studies and UCSB Library announce the fourth annual "Art of Science" competition.

In science, as in art, the practitioner pursues moments of discovery when observations become greater than the sum of their parts and begin to reveal an untold story.  Join us this winter in an event to capture the imagination, challenge beliefs and expectations, and share the beauty and meaning of science through illustrative photographs and images from your research.

The Art of Science initiative invites current UCSB undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs to tell the story of their research through the aesthetic. Whether it be striking spectroscopic images of a new material, data from a series of simulations, interesting photos of a device or instrument, or some other aspect of research captured visually, we invite you to share it.

Since 2014, the annual competitions have seen over 100 submissions, with winning pieces on exhibits at the UCSB Library, UCSB Art, Design and Architecture Museum, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. This year's winners will once again begin their exhibition cycle at the UCSB Library in Summer 2017. We look forward to these works of art sharing the creativity and joy of discovery with our community.

First-place will receive a prize of $250. Prizes of smaller amounts will also be awarded to second, third-place and community vote winners.

Submissions due February 3, 2017
