Description

What if you could see through walls? X-Ray Vision showcases the conversion of the physical world into millions of measured points captured through a color laser scanner. This data will be used to generate computer models that can make “x-ray vision” possible through augmented reality systems. This image shows a rendered point cloud of the UCSB Art, Design, and Architecture Museum located across from the bookstore. Point cloud measurements were made with a Riegl LMS-Z420i terrestrial laser scanner with an instrument-mounted camera for colorizing the points. Multiple scans were performed around, above, and inside the building to generate the comprehensive indoor-outdoor data set. Creating this artistic image involved rendering, cleaning, and taking a snapshot of the point cloud in CloudCompare; resizing the image in Photoshop; and performing two iterations of tone mapping using the Photomatix high dynamic range (HDR) imaging software.
