Description

This is a 3D image of a yeast cells during mating generated form a z-stack of confocal microscope images. In green is the broad polarization of active Cdc42 on the cell membrane and in red is the narrow region of Spa2 polarization. While this is an image generated from in situ data, we have recently published a mathematical model of this system that shows that spatial stochastic effects (effects due to spatially distributed noise in the system) are what allow tight polarization of Spa2 (red) given a broad input polarization of Cdc42 (green). The slide was prepared by Professor Tau-Mu Yi, the z-stack of images were taken by Michael Lawson and the 3D rendering was down by Michael Lawson with help from Mary Raven.
