Description

Forgotten for weeks at the back of a lab bench, the once-colorless solutions turn vibrant shades of red. Solutions of ruthenium (III) hexamine chloride are unstable in water, eventually forming the polynuclear dye "ruthenium red." Addition of acid to ruthenium red produces the oxidized form, "ruthenium brown."
