Every second, one thousand stars in the Universe die as insanely bright explosions called supernovae. Astronomers found about 37,000 supernovae so far, with a new stellar explosion being discovered nearly every hour. This music video shows the chronological discovery of all supernovae since the year 1950 up until now, played on the xylophone and crammed into seven minutes. With each whole note in the song, half of a year passes by. The more notes you hear and the wider their range, the more supernovae there are being discovered. Different types of supernovae are shown by different shapes. For you worry warts out there, our Sun will never go supernova.
