Description

Neutrophils are white blood cells that act as a first line of defense against foreign pathogens. In a unique process called Netosis, Beta-glucans from bacteria and fungi can trigger neutrophils to extrude their own DNA and degradative enzymes, creating an extracellular web.

This is painting done with acrylic paint on wood. It depicts mushrooms triggering the act of Netosis in a cell which has expelled it's chromatin to trap the fungi. The bird nest symbolizes the Dectin receptor that recognizes B-glucan and relays downstream signals.
