Computational materials scientists create models of the materials they study. Typically, visualizations of these of models are utilitarian, with features serving only to support an analysis or conclusion. This 3D rendered model welcomes what is long overdue, imagination and embellishment.
This work depicts a micro structural model of a polycrystalline material sat in the Castello district of Venice overlooking the Venetian Lagoon. The model is bejeweled in glassy crystals representing the grains of the microstructure, with their color indicating crystallographic orientation.
