By investigating the ordering in a solution-deposited thin film of an organic semiconductor through the use of polarized optical microscopy (POM), we can peer into the alien worlds of the micro- and nanoscale. Thanks to the Segalman group for the use of their microscope.
Order is extremely important for charge transport in organic semiconductor materials. However, this is difficult to achieve by solution processing. Viewing a sample through crossed polarizers highlights the ordered areas of the film, which helps us learn about the dynamics during the solution deposition process. Based on these observations, we are able to design new materials and processing techniques to improve the performance of organic electronic devices.
